Course Description

This new and unique Open College designed Activities Coordinator continuous personal development (CPD) course will look at how therapeutic and recreational activities are of paramount importance in the promotion of resident’s / clients quality of life and how the Activity Coordinator plays a central role in delivering purposeful activities that stimulate residents and improve their wellbeing.

Prepared and written by our expert Healthcare tutors to link closely with our QQI Healthcare Support programmes this course will further explore the impact of ageing, social transitions associated with ageing and the importance of person centred care.

The course will allow learners to develop approaches to designing and implementing activity programmes in their work settings. The emphasis throughout this course is on developing positive communication skills, facilitating developmental activities and fostering meaningful participation with older people in care.

On completion of the course it is hoped the learner will have developed upon their existing skills and knowledge base, in order to confidently develop his/her skills and understanding of the importance of designing, implementing and evaluating an activities programme within the care setting, which are engaging and beneficial to people in care.

 

Aims/Objectives

  1. To assist the learner to gain knowledge of the impact and social transitions associated with ageing
  2. To support the learner in developing their knowledge, skills and understanding of the needs of people in care to have access to meaningful activities in the promotion of wellbeing and quality of life
  3. To assist the learner to develop greater awareness of person-centred care, best practices and importance of effective communication skills in the care setting
  4. To enable the learner to gain knowledge of the concepts of assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating an activities programme for residents / clients within the care setting
  5. To facilitate the learner to recognise the important role of the activity coordinator in promoting a culture of positive change which embraces the persons needs for activities which maintain and develop their personal identity
  6. To develop learner’s knowledge of the various recreational and therapeutic activities.

Unit Two: The Role of the Activities Coordinator in Care

  • Benefits of engaging in therapeutic, physical, cognitive and social activities 
  • Importance of Involving clients, family and staff in activities
  • Activities for clients with specific needs 
  • Importance of effective communication and interpersonal skills

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites:

  • Level 4 Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.
  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning or eLearning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.
  • If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.

 

Assessment:

 

Portfolio 100%:

The internal assessor will devise a portfolio brief that requires candidates to demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding of the key learning outcomes.

Candidates will be required to present a comprehensive portfolio addressing the role of the activities coordinator in promoting therapeutic and recreational activities in the care environment.

 

The portfolio will be assessed on the following:

Part A: Assignment – 40%

  • Role of the activities coordinator in care
  • Understanding the impact of ageing
  • Importance of promoting a positive culture in care
  • Importance of a person centered approach
  • Benefits of therapeutic and recreational activities
  • Relevant research and sources of information.
  • Comprehensive analysis and reflection of findings and logical conclusions and recommendations.

 

Part B: Skills Demonstration Report – 60%

The skills demonstration report will be assessed on the following:

  • Assessment of client / residents needs in relation to activities
  • Planning a weekly activities schedule for clients/residents in care
  • Implementing the planned activities 
  • Evaluation of outcomes.

 

Accreditation

  • Following completion of your course assignments you will receive a Certificate in Activities Coordination from The Open College.
