The module aims to promote awareness and increase knowledge with regard to the aetiology, signs, symptoms of those with disabilities and conditions; including an overview of the role of therapies and techniques.

Who should complete this course?

Preferred entry level:

  • FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Childcare or equivalent qualification or relevant experience
  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.
  • Students must be competent in both written and spoken English.

Programme Entry Requirements:

  • If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you.  You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
  • If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.
  • As part of the assessment criteria for this course students’ will need to carry out practical demonstrations, all candidate’s who enroll for this course must have the agreement from their supervisor/manager in the work place to oversee their practical work.

Progression to further Studies:

  • This course leads to a level 6 award on the National Framework of Qualifications.
  • Students who successfully complete this programme may use this Level 6 credit towards completing a Major FETAC award.

Assessment:

This course is assessed through a number of assignments and a final exam which students must complete to demonstrate their understanding of various topics.

Examination (Theory) 60%

The internal assessor will devise a brief that requires the candidate to produce evidence that demonstrates an understanding and application, within the workplace, of a range of specific learning outcomes with regard to a chosen disability or condition.

Examination: The internal assessor will devise a theory-based examination that assesses the candidate’s ability to recall and apply theory and understanding, requiring responses to a range of structured questions. These questions may be answered in different media such as in writing or orally.
The examination will be based on a range of specific learning outcomes from all units of the module and will be 2 hours in duration.

The format of the examination will be as follows:
25 Short Questions to answer 20
4 structured questions
Candidates are required to answer 3 (20 marks each)

Grading:

Pass 50 - 64%
Merit 65 - 79%
Distinction 80 - 100%

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Component Certificate in Disability Awareness (L32333) at Level 6.
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland.
