Who should complete this course?

  • People who wish to pursue a career working as a Teaching Assistant.

Preferred entry level:

  • FETAC Level 4 Certificate or Leaving Certificate.
  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.
    As part of the assessment criteria for this module candidates are required to compose a reflective diary worth 20% of their overall marks; all applicants must have access to observe a classroom environment and have the agreement of a mentor or supervisor to oversee their practical work.

Programme Entry Requirements:

  • If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you. You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.

Progression to further Studies:

  • This course leads to a level 6 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use this Level 6 credit towards completing a Major FETAC award.

Assessment:

This course is assessed through a number of assignments and a final exam which students must complete to demonstrate their understanding of various topics.

Project: The internal assessor will devise a project brief that requires candidates to produce a study that demonstrates an understanding of student behavioural issues within the school setting. As part of the study, candidates will be required to carry out and evaluate a number (minimum 3) of student observations, in consultation with the classroom teacher. The focus will be based on the student’s behavioural needs. Candidates must include conclusion and recommendations to develop strategies to promote positive behaviour of the observed student.

Assignment: The internal assessor will design a brief of an activity that requires the candidate to produce evidence to demonstrate an understanding and application of a range of specific learning outcomes of the National Curriculum in a school environment.

Reflective Diary: A personal record will be compiled by candidates. It will reflect and evaluate classroom experiences, based on the statutory regulations and school policies.

Grading:

Pass 50 - 64%
Merit 65 - 79%
Distinction 80 - 100%

Accreditation:

  • Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Component Certificate in Teaching Assistant Skills (N32836) at Level 6.
  • The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland.
