Course Description

 

The purpose of this professional development Early Childhood Arts and Culture (Montessori Culture) course is to equip the learner with the necessary skills and competence to ensure that each child develops a competent level of learning through Arts and Culture in a Childcare setting.

Each student will gain a full understanding of the montessori method of teaching Arts and Culture. Students will be introduced to the montessori materials used in Arts and Culture the presentation of these materials to the child.

Students will also gain an understanding of how the Arts and Culture exercises can be implemented into everyday life and within the montessori and childcare field. Each student will be equipped with the skills to support the child in developing their own self expression through the Arts and Culture exercises in the montessori classroom.

The student will recognise the importance of creative Arts and Culture and how the outside world can be interpreted and explained via these areas.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites:

  • Level 5 Award or equivalent in a relevant subject area (Childcare) and/or relevant practical experience (3 years minimum) – Please ask about our requirements surrounding Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for entry.

  • Mature students (over 23 years) may be exempt from the above prerequisites.

  • Students must currently be working (or on work experience) in the Childcare sector for a minimum of 6 hours per week (30 hours minimum), in a Montessori Environment throughout the course, as assignments will require learners to draw upon practical experience using Montessori Philosophies and Montessori Materials.

  • English Language Requirement: Students entering programmes leading to awards at Level 6 are expected to be able to: fluently read, draft, prepare and understand complex information, including quantitative information, that is personally relevant and reflecting a broad knowledge base. For example, this might include text and other information relating to abstract theoretical ideas, concerns or procedures, such as local planning concerns in relation to broader spatial strategy, political issues in relation to particular agenda, budget plans/ specifications.

  • Garda Vetting is required for all Childcare placements and students can apply for this through The Open College. Please ask for details.

  • Certain assessments require completion of work, which must be observed and evaluated by a Supervisor or Line manager.

  • Learners undertaking this programme must have basic IT skills and access to the necessary equipment to enable them to undertake an online programme: computer, broadband, email, Microsoft, recording equipment necessary for some skills demonstration tasks, and where applicable any other specialised software/equipment. 

  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning or eLearning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.

Project x 2 – 40%
Skills Demonstrations x 2 – 60%

 

Projects: The internal assessor will devise two briefs that require the candidates to produce pieces of work of a minimum of 1500 words each.

  • Learners are required to critically evaluate the importance of an area within the Arts and Cultural work in the Montessori classroom.
  • Critically evaluate the importance of the Adult in enhancing the creative and self-expressive skills of the child in the ECCE setting through the Arts and Cultural works.

Skills Demonstrations: The internal assessor will devise two skills demonstrations that require the candidates to produce pieces of work.

  • Devise a lesson plan for a music and dance exercise for a child or group of children from 2.5 – 6 years of age.

The learner must devise the lesson plan that is age appropriate to the age of the chosen child/children.

  • Learners are required to devise an art or Music poster that is used in the Montessori classroom as a learning aid. They must choose an artist or musician and create a poster to be used in the Montessori classroom.

Delivery Format

 

This Early Childhood Arts and Culture (Montessori Culture) professional development course is completed through Online Learning and there are no lectures to attend.

Students can complete this course within 8 weeks which is ample time and can start it at any time of the year that is convenient. If students need to extend this period for any reason during or near the end of the course they can request an extension through the college.
