Course Description
This unique Open College designed Autism in the Early Years Sector continuous personal development (CPD) course equips learners with the necessary knowledge about autism and how to support autistic children in educational environments. Grounded in current Irish policy and research, the course takes a neuro-affirming, rights-based approach throughout, recognising autism as a natural part of human diversity rather than a deficit to be fixed.
You will explore what autism means from a neurodiversity perspective, the importance of identity-first language, and why the voices of autistic people must be central to inclusive practice. The course covers key Irish legislation and policy frameworks that underpin special education and disability rights, tracing the shift from medical and deficit-based models towards rights-based, strengths-focused approaches.
Practical, evidence-based strategies are a core focus. You will learn how to create safe, predictable, and sensory-considerate learning environments, understand regulation and co-regulation, support communication using a total communication approach (including AAC), and manage transitions effectively.
The course also explores Ireland’s SÃolta and Aistear frameworks and the Access and Inclusion Model (AIM) as tools for building genuinely inclusive early years settings.
Throughout the course, interactive elements including podcasts, dialogue-based scenarios, reflection activities, and knowledge checks support active engagement with the material.
