Course Description
The aim of this brand new online QQI Level 6 Child Psychology (6S22695) course is to promote learners’ theoretical and practical understanding of the psychological principles which underpin the development of the child, drawing on real life experiences and case studies. Additionally, the programme aims to provide an understanding of how that theoretical knowledge is relevant in applied context as reflected, for example, in best educational practice.
Learners will have the opportunity to engage with a range of theoretical perspectives and applying their understanding using interactive case studies to advance their knowledge of the subject matter in a real-world context.
By the end of this online Child Psychology Course learners will have a broad understanding of child psychology and how it forms a foundation for adult psychology and lifespan development.

Assessments:
Learners will have the opportunity to engage with a range of assessment techniques which aim to reflect the application of theoretical knowledge in a real-world context.
The following techniques have been carefully selected in accordance with best practice for online assessment and learners will have the opportunity to engage with each of these techniques at some point over their programme.
Assignment (30%):

Learners will be required to construct an academic essay exploring and comparing key developmental theories discussed in the module. Learners will be required to include an analysis of strengths, limitations, and applications of at least three theoretical perspectives. Learners will also consider how these theories contribute to our understanding of developmental changes from infancy through adolescence.
Case Study (50%):

Learners will be required to compile a comprehensive case study that explores a child’s psychological development, considering the interplay of social, biological, cultural and historical factors, with dedicated examination of gender influences. The case study will include the child’s background, relevant family dynamics, cultural influences, and historical context. Learners are expected to analyse how these factors contribute to the child’s developmental outcomes and discuss implications for intervention or support.
Reflective Journal (20%):

Learners will be required to maintain a reflective journal throughout the module, where they will regularly reflect on personal attitudes, values, and beliefs related to child development topics covered in the module. Learners are expected to analyse how these perspectives may influence professional practice and decision- making. Learners are also required to summarise key insights gained over the module and identify areas for continued growth.

Delivery Format
The course will be delivered online using a combination of class based tutorials and other suitable online teaching and learning activities. Over the duration of this programme all learners will engage in approx. 14 hours of study each week which considers a mix of directed and self-directed study.
The blended teaching and learning approach will be suited to those with responsibilities that do not enable them to undertake classroom-based training on a full-time basis and is intended to meet the needs of a diverse range of learner profiles. The programme makes accommodation for those who wish to upskill and/or create opportunities for progression to other suitable further education and training programmes.
Suitable teaching methods will comprise of a range of teaching and learning activities that are intended for the direct teaching of core module topics. The programme is developed in a way which promotes individual learning development while also encouraging peer to peer engagement and interactions. These methods will be guided and supported through online lectures, tutorials, discussions, collaborative and independent learning.
Additionally, learners will engage in a series of online activities which will include pre-recorded video content, written content, discussion forums, presentations, uploaded readings, quizzes and exercises, all of which will all be hosted in the colleges eLearning system.
Entry Requirements
The programme will cater for a variety of adult learners who may be seeking new or advancing career opportunities, or who just wish to upskill and update their personal and/or professional knowledge. Although interest in psychology is common, it is envisioned that the programme will be suitable to the following learner profiles:
- Early Years Educators/Leaders who wish to gain a greater understanding of child psychology to inform their work and thus enable best practice.
- Individuals interested in psychology broadly, and child psychology in particular.
- Parents, or prospective parents, who wish to gain a greater understanding of their child’s development, and ways to foster optimal cognitive and socio-emotional growth.
The pre-requisites for entry will consider each of the following:
- Level 5 certificate or equivalent in a relevant subject area (Early Years, Youth Studies, Community Care, Psychology) and/or relevant professional experience (3 years minimum). Where a learner has not completed a formal qualification at the preceding level, arrangements for prior learning (formal and/or informal) will be considered to assess the required level of knowledge and skill to access the programme.
- Learners must hold an Irish or UK PPS number.
- Learning Effort: Learners should be aware that each 15-credit component requires a learning effort of 150 hours (1 credit=10 hours) so that they can achieve the module outcomes. This includes time for undertaking both directed and self-directed teaching activities in the examples of readings, research, assessment work, online activities and attendance at Live Online Lectures.
- As the programme aims to promote independent study skills, learners must be capable of studying on their own initiate, demonstrating their ability to plan and manage their own individual study schedules.
- English Language Requirement: learners entering programmes leading to awards at Level 6 are expected to be able to: fluently read, draft, prepare and understand complex information, including quantitative information, which is personally relevant and reflecting a broad knowledge base. Any applicant whose first language is not English may also be required to demonstrate their level of English proficiency by completion of an appropriate recognised test such as IELTS (or equivalent) achieving a score of 6.5 or higher.
- Digital Literacy: learners undertaking this programme must have a basic working knowledge of computers and their associated applications that will enable them to successfully participate in a blended learning programme. Learners must have access to the necessary equipment which will enable them to successfully participate in the online activities i.e., computer, broadband, email, recording equipment necessary for some skills demonstration tasks, and where applicable any other specialised software/equipment.
- Reasonable accommodations will be considered for any learner who may have any additional needs or requirements.
- Although there are no requirements for work placement, learners will need Garda Vetting clearance if/when working directly with children.
