This fully online QQI Challenging Behaviour module is designed for people seeking to gain the appropriate knowledge, skills and competencies necessary for supporting and managing individuals who present with behaviours that challenge.

 

Course content:

The module content is grouped into lessons which are intended to guide and inform the learning journey from start to finish – and so that learners may have the opportunity to engage in a cohesive and meaning eLearning experience.

A mixture of online resources will be made available so that learners have the opportunity to engage with a broad mix of content, this considers but is not limited to each of the following;

Learners who successfully complete the module will have had the opportunity to:

  • Explore the context of challenging behaviour and acquire a knowledge base that allows them to understand the reasons, triggers and impact of challenging behaviour on the individual, support staff, family and service providers.
  • Research theoretical and conceptual dimensions so that they are equip with the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies to be effective in supporting the education of those with Challenging Behaviour in various contexts.
  • Examine the importance of holistic and systemic approaches in meeting the needs of individuals with Challenging Behaviour.
  • Analyse challenging behaviour and formulate various simplistic strategies and techniques for individuals who present as challenging.
  • Investigate the importance of positive approaches to be applied when caring for and working with individuals who present as challenging in a safe holistic manner.
  • Correlate information in the development of a behavioural support plan, which is individualised and advocates positive outcomes.
  • Examine the key elements required to work with and support individuals with intellectual /learning disabilities who present as challenging.

General Aims of the Course:

  • To develop skills, knowledge and understanding for dealing with individuals who present as challenging.
  • To promote good practice amongst those working with or have personal experiences with individuals (children/adults) who present as challenging.
  • To meet the training needs of those working or volunteering in a range of care settings.

Lesson 1: Orientation and Introductions

Lesson 2: What is Challenging Behaviour and Understanding the underlining factors that contribute to CB.

Lesson 3: The impact of CB.

Lesson 4: Defining & Measuring Behaviour and developing a Positive Behaviour Support plan that is person focused.

Lesson 5: Assessment of Needs & Evaluation.

Lesson 6: The ABC Model.

Lesson 7: Policy and Guidelines on the Management of CB.

Lesson 8: Selecting the appropriate Interventions & Strategies which are  person focused.

Lesson 9: Promoting a positive environment and the importance of effective communication.

Lesson 10: Revision and Assessment Preparation.

Assessment:

The overall assessment strategy centres around an Authentic Assessment approach whereby learners are given opportunities to perform tasks which demonstrate meaningful application of skills and knowledge.  

A continuous assessment approach will evaluate the learning progress continually over the teaching period of the module. The methods used to achieve this will include;

  • Forum contributions (10%)
  • Interactive oral (30%)
  • Project (60%)

  • Merit 65 – 79%
  • Distinction 80 – 100%

Delivery Format

 

Our Challenging Behaviour module will be delivered online using a combination of suitable online teaching and learning activities. Module delivery will be considered in two contexts; Directed and Self-Directed Learning with guided online tutor supports.

The Teaching and Learning strategy aims to improve the overall educational experience for learners through the provision of more flexible methods of teaching, learning and assessment which caters for all learners from all backgrounds.

The module will run at certain times during the calendar year – usually on a monthly basis, and intakes are subject to minimum (10) and Maximum (25) numbers.

* Workshops – The key distinction between classes and workshops is that workshops are focused on developing skills (often with the goal of working towards an assessment), and applying previous knowledge rather than being introduced to new concepts. A focus on active participation.

 

Entry Requirements

 

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites:

Learners entering onto the programme will have previously undertaken one or more of the following;

  • Leaving Certificate, and/or Level 4 Certificate or equivalent in a relevant subject area, and/or Relevant Experience (3 years).
  • English Language: students entering onto any programme at NFQ Level 5 are expected to: be proficient at reading, drafting, preparing and understanding information across a broad range of topics, including quantitative information. Any applicant whose first language is not English may also be required to demonstrate their level of English proficiency by completion of an appropriate recognised test such as IELTS, achieving a score of 5.5 or higher.
  • Digital Literacy: as the programme will be delivered online, learners undertaking this programme must have basic IT skills and access to the necessary equipment which will enable them to successfully participate in an online programme, i.e., computer, broadband, email, recording equipment necessary for some skills demonstration tasks, and where applicable any other specialised software/equipment.
  • Due to the flexible nature of online learning provision learners must be capable of studying on their own initiative.
