The purpose of our QQI Level 5 Medical Terminology distance learning programme is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the range of medial terminology applicable and relevant specifically to a medical
receptionist or secretarial role in a medical practice, clinic and or hospital context.

 

Students will learn how to:

  1. use and understand medical terminology,
  2. understand relevant legislation,
  3. manage healthcare records,
  4. create healthcare records,
  5. administer a medical office environment, and
  6. prepare medical reports.

 

The course will be ideal for all those working in:

  • Administration or customer service roles within Private Consultant clinics, Hospitals, Doctor or Dentist surgeries, and private Health Clinics or
  • Learners who have studied Healthcare Support Major Award – 5M4339 and wish to add a new skillset to their qualification.
  • Other learners working towards a major qualification of which Medical Terminology is a component including – Office Administration Major Award – 5M1997.

Unit One: Medical Terminology

  • Understand and recognise medical terminology used in a general practice or specialised practice.
  • Medical terminology relevant to the role of medical secretary/receptionist.
  • Medical terminology related to anatomical positions, body structures, functions and process.
  • Terminology associated with clinical pharmacology, clinical tests and examinations and specialist areas.

 

Unit Two: Legislation related to the Health Services in Ireland

  • Data Protection Act.
  • Disability Act 2005.
  • Employment Equality Act 1998.
  • Equal Status Act 2000 & the Equality Act 2004.
  • Ethics in Public Office Act 1995.
  • Freedom of Information Act 1997 & 2003.
  • Health Act 2004 & 2007.
  • Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005.
  • Mental Health Act 2001.
  • Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.

 

Unit Three: Communication and Administration

  • Medical terminology related to a range of medial documentation and healthcare records.
  • Application of correct medical terminology.
  • Communicating with medical professionals, clients and general public.
  • Organise and assemble medical reports in an organised manner.  
  • Prepare and Produce medical reports.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites:

  • Leaving certificate, Level 4 certificate or equivalent in a relevant subject area (Healthcare) and/or relevant practical experience (3 years minimum) – Please ask about our requirements surrounding Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for entry.

  • Mature students (over 23 years) may be exempt from the above prerequisites.

  • Learners will be required to undertake a practical supervised work placement (30 hours minimum) within a relevant Medical Administration area.

  • English Language Requirement: Students entering programmes leading to awards at Level 5 are expected to be able to: be proficient at reading, drafting, preparing and understanding information across a broad range of topics, including quantitative information.

  • Garda Vetting is required for all Healthcare placements and students can apply for this through The Open College. Please ask for details.

  • Certain assessments require completion of work, which must be observed and evaluated by a Supervisor or Line manager.

  • Learners undertaking this programme must have basic IT skills and access to the necessary equipment to enable them to undertake an online programme: computer, broadband, email, Microsoft, recording equipment necessary for some skills demonstration tasks, and where applicable any other specialised software/equipment. 

  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning or eLearning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.

Assignment:

The assessment brief(s) x 2 will focus on a broad range of specific learning outcomes and will require  candidates to process and show understanding of the following:

Assignment 1:

Identify and illustrate understanding of a range of medical terminology. The learner will focus on:

  • Structure, process and functions of two body systems.
  • Major terms of the body systems, correctly labelled on diagrams.
  • The anatomical relationship and connection of the systems addressed.
  • Medical terminology associated with the systems analysed: eg. disorders, procedures, diseases, clinical tests, specialist department, treatments.

Assignment 2:

Illustrates understanding of legislation, sources of information and the importance of effective communication by focusing on:

  • Describing a minimum of 2 legislative acts pertaining to health and social care services in Ireland.
  • The purpose and composition of the Healthcare Record illustrated.
  • Outlining a minimum of 2 other sources of information available to the medical secretary / receptionist.
  • Examining the importance of using correct medical terminology in communicating with patients and medical practitioners within the context of written and verbal processes.

Evidence for this assessment technique may take the form of written, graphic, or computerised evidence, or any combination of these. All instructions are clearly outlined in the assessment briefs.

 

Skills Demonstration:

Candidates will be assessed in a broad range of practical skills. The learner will complete 3 skills demonstrations that assess the learners mastery of specified practical and organisational skills in medical terminology, which will be assessed in workplace setting and online through live chat with our tutors.

The learner  will be required to submit evidence in writing, a completed competency record and where stipulated in the assessment briefs, recorded on audio / video.

All instructions for the learner will be clearly outlined in a Competency Booklet and a Detailed Brief provided by The Open College.

This Medical Terminology QQI Level 5 (5N2428) course is completed through Distance Learning and there are no lectures to attend. Course is run all year round and students can start after enrollment.

Students can complete this course within 8 weeks which is ample time and can start it at any time of the year that is convenient. If students need to extend this period for any reason during or near the end of the course they can request an extension through the college.
