Course Description

 

Our new QQI Level 5 Combined Home Care Assistant Training Course is designed to meet the training needs of those commencing work in the Home Care Sector. This programme will suit learners seeking to secure a position as a home carer with one of Ireland’s home care agencies.

The course aims to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the role of a Care Assistant and promote good practice among those working in the Care Industry. These two modules will also enable learners to progress to the required Healthcare Support Assistant Major Award – 5M4339.

 

Included in this specially combined course are two key QQI Healthcare components at level 5:

  1. QQI Care Skills (5N2770) – Level 5
  2. QQI Care of the Older Person (5N2706) – Level 5.

A total of 30 NFQ Credits will be obtained upon successful completion of both modules.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites:

  • Leaving certificate, Level 4 certificate or equivalent in a relevant subject area and/or relevant practical experience (3 years minimum).

  • Mature students (over 23 years) may be exempt from the above prerequisites.

  • Learners will be required to undertake a practical supervised work placement (20 hours per module minimum – 40 hours in total) within the relevant vocational area.

  • It is recommended that learners complete a Manual Handling or Patient Handling course in conjunction with this course although it is not a mandatory module this is something that employers may look for. Also please note that some Healthcare providers may require proof of Covid 19 Vaccinations before work placements are accepted. 

  • English Language Requirement: Learners entering programmes leading to awards at Level 5 are expected to be able to: be proficient at reading, drafting, preparing and understanding information across a broad range of topics, including quantitative information.

  • Garda Vetting is required for all Healthcare placements and learners can apply for this through The Open College. Please check our FAQ’s page for more information on Garda Vetting and International Vetting if you have lived outside Ireland for 6 months or more. 

  • Learners must be a based in Ireland and hold an Irish or UK PPS number.

  • Learners undertaking this programme must have basic IT skills and access to the necessary equipment to enable them to undertake an online programme: computer, broadband, email, Microsoft, recording equipment necessary for some skills demonstration tasks, and where applicable any other specialised software/equipment. 

  • As this programme is delivered through eLearning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.

  • Be competent in both written and spoken English.

Care Skills Module:

Skills Demonstration:

In one or more skills demonstrations, candidates will be assessed in a broad range of practical skills. Candidates will be assessed completing a minimum of three practical tasks, with reference to the following elements:

  • Preparation and Implementation
  • Communication
  • Health and Safety Provision.

To demonstrate these skills learners, if not working in this area, will need to have access to independent verifiable working experience of not less than 40 hours.

 

Assignments:

  • The internal assessor will devise two briefs that require candidates to produce evidence demonstrating an understanding and application of a range of specific learning outcomes. Each assignment should focus on an aspect of client care, during a six week minimum period of work experience in a health care setting.

 

 

Care of the Older Person Module:

 

Skills Demonstration 60%
Project 40%.

 

Skills Demonstration:

In one or more skills demonstrations, candidates will be assessed in a broad range of practical skills. Candidates will be observed carrying out specific planned tasks/activities in the workplace, for example an organised event for the client group.

Candidates will be required to demonstrate the following skills:

  • organisation and preparation of the tasks, paying particular attention to meeting the needs of clients
  • ability to carry out the task
  • communication with the client and any other appropriate person throughout the tasks, including the demonstration of consultation with the client and displays of encouragement and empathy
  • use of appropriate safety and health practices.

Candidates will submit brief written documentation as part of the assessment, to include:

  • a record of how the tasks were planned and carried out
  • improvements the candidate could make to task.

 

Project:

The internal assessor will devise a project brief that requires candidates to demonstrate their understanding of older persons with specific needs.

Through the project, candidates will demonstrate:

  • understanding and application of concepts associated with caring for older people with specific needs
  • use of relevant research and sources of information
  • analyse, evaluation, draw conclusions and make recommendations.

 

 

Accreditation

 
  • Following successful completion you will receive the following QQI component Certificates: Care Skills (5N2770) and Care of the Older Person (5N2706).
  • QQI (Quality & Qualifications Ireland) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland. QQI Distance Learning Courses

 

Delivery Format

 

This QQI Level 5 Combined Home Care Assistant Training course is completed through online distance learning and there are no lectures to attend.

Students can complete this course within 16 weeks (8 weeks per module) which is ample time and can start it at any time of the year that is convenient. If students need to extend this period for any reason during or near the end of the course they can request an extension through the college.
