  • What QQI award do I receive? On successful completion of this programme you will gain a QQI Level 6 Special Purpose award (30 Credits),
  • How is it delivered? This blended learning programme combines both class based tutorials held in our offices located in Dublin 18, with live online lectures, and access to associated other interactive learning materials on our eLearning platform Moodle. You will be expected to attend approx. 2 hours of Live Online Lectures each week (Mon-Fri) with some additional class based Tutorials/Workshops to be held across some Saturdays over the duration of the programme.
  • How long is this Level 6 Certificate in Sports Leadership? This programme will be completed over 24 weeks. You will undertake two modules during this time (10 weeks each) and there will be scheduled breaks in between each module. New programme intakes will take place each quarter commencing September 2023*.

Course Description

 

This brand new programme Leadership in Sports (QQI Level 6 – Special Purpose Award) will comprise 2x 15 credit modules which aims to promote learners understanding of the relationship between psychological principals and effective leadership practice in Sports. The programme is built upon four key themes to include; Psychology, Coaching, Leadership and Professional Development, which aims to bring to life the application of theory into practice drawing on real life experiences and case studies.

Learners from a range of sporting backgrounds are encouraged to participate by way of facilitating collaborative learning and peer to peer engagement through shared experiences. On successful completion of the programme learners will be confident in providing leadership to a sporting team/individual for the overall improvement of performance in a range of sporting contexts.

This programme is intended for active and aspiring sports coaches/leaders as well as those working within the sporting community and wish to gain an understanding of the role of Leadership in Sports and its applications in various sporting contexts.

Additionally, the programme will cater for adult learners with some relevant life or work experience who may be seeking new or advancing career opportunities, or who just wish to upskill and update their professional knowledge.

The blended teaching and learning approach will be suited to those with responsibilities that do not enable them to undertake classroom-based training on a full-time basis and is intended to meet the needs of a diverse range of learner profiles and make accommodations for those who may already be working in the sector or in other vocations who wish to change career paths. Learners will also have the opportunity to use this award for progression to other suitable further and higher education and training programmes.

 

Course Details

 

Programme Objectives:

  • Develop learners awareness of the psychological theories which underpin the behaviours of those participating in sport.
  • Enable the learner to apply specialised knowledge, skills and competences to lead a sporting team/individual.

  • Assist learners to explore the key principals and ethical standards which underpin the role of the coach.

  • Encourage learners to reflect on the effectiveness of applying theoretical principals into their day to day practice.

  • Develop autonomous leaders who are committed to personal and professional development capable of demonstrating high quality leadership practice.

  • To develop academic and digitally literate learners capable of confidently using a range of technologies to support their learning and practice and source employment opportunities.

 

Module & Programme Structures:

Over the duration of this QQI Level 6 Special Purpose programme you will complete 2 x 15 credits modules which will link both theory and practice which can be applied across a range of sporting contexts.

Two Compulsory Modules (30 Credits):

 

Module (1): Applied Sports Psychology – 15 Credits

The aim of this module is to equip learners with the Knowledge, Skills and Competence to integrate psychological principles into their coaching and leadership roles, with the aim of improving levels of participation, performance and experience for their athletes and teams.

On completion of this module, you will be able to;

  • Evaluate the key theories of sport psychology including personality and motivation and how they influence performance.
  • Explain how key psychological areas such as focus, confidence, goal setting, anxiety and arousal affect performance.
  • Identify how leadership and coaching can integrate with psychology for the overall improvement of the athletes experience.
  • Apply psychological principles to improve performance across a range of sporting contexts.

 

Module (2): Leadership and Coaching in Sport – 15 Credits

The aim of this module is to equip the learners with the Knowledge, Skill and Competence to provide leadership to a sports team/individual, underpinned by professional and ethical coaching standards of practice.

  • Evaluate key leaderships theories and principals that can be applied to a range of a sporting contexts
  • Implement the skills, qualities and responsibilities associated with successful sports leadership in a chosen environment with recognition to the importance of CPD.
  • Examine of the role of the coach and the coaching process and understand how to create a positive environment while applying professional and ethical standards.
  • Demonstrate good practice in managing and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders with the aim of maximising engagement and enjoyment in sport.

Assessment Strategies:

The overall summative assessment strategy centres around a continuous assessment approach which emphasises the link between theory and practice.  Learners will undertake three assessments within each module and individual assessment techniques have been carefully selected in accordance with best practice for online assessment which promotes both academic and digital literacy skills.

Over the duration of the programme, learners will have the opportunity to interact with online technologies and to reflect on the application of theoretical knowledge and how this relates to practice. Learners will undertake each of the following assessments across the programme;

  • Online Discussion Forum
  • PowerPoint Presentation
  • Case Study
  • Assignment

Additionally, learners will also engage with a range on online activities which contributes to the formative assessment approach within each module. Lecturers will provide timely feedback through live online lectures and tutorials as well as through ongoing communications. Learners may also avail of the opportunity of submitting a draft assessment that is also intended as another outlet for formative assessment and feedback.

(There will be scheduled breaks in between each module and for the Christmas holidays, additional time will be given at the end of the 20 weeks for final assessment preparation).

 

 

 

Protection for Learners on this Level 5 Major Award:

As a course provider our policy on the protection for learners is subject to Section 43 of the Qualifications Act. This means that if, for whatever reason, we cease to provide the programme that is over 3 months in duration which you enrolled for, we have specific and legally binding arrangements in place to finish out that programme for you at no extra cost. All course fees for programmes over 3 months in duration are fully protected and secured by a Bond.

If we cease trading those learners who have not finished their programme will be fully protected by this Bond which will be automatically triggered and the fund that covers all Fees paid by learners will be transferred to QQI by our Bond Management firm to enable QQI provide further study options for these learners or the refund of fees most recently paid so that they can complete their programme and all of this will be at no extra cost to the learners affected.

How does our online blended learning work?

This Leadership in Sports (QQI Level 6 – Special Purpose Award) as a blended learning programme using a combination of class based tutorials and other suitable online teaching and learning activities. Over the duration of this programme all learners will engage in approx. 13 hours of study each week which considers a mix of directed and  independent study.

Over the duration of this one year programme all learners will engage in approx. 20-30 hours of study each week which considers a mix of directed, independent and work-based learning.

Suitable teaching methods will compromise a range of teaching and learning activities which includes Live Online Lectures that are intended for the direct teaching of core module topics, to support the learning process and to assist in the understanding of the module content while also encouraging peer to peer engagement and interactions.

Additionally, learners will engage in a series of online activities which will include pre-recorded video content, written content, discussion forums, presentations, uploaded readings, quizzes and exercises, all of which will all be hosted in the colleges eLearning system.

 

Entry Requirements

 

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites:

This programme is intended for active and aspiring sports coaches/leaders as well as those working within the sporting community and wish to gain an understanding of the role of Leadership in Sports and its applications in various sporting contexts.

Additionally, the programme will cater for adult learners with some relevant life or work experience who may be seeking new or advancing career opportunities, or who just wish to upskill and update their professional knowledge.

The pre-requisites for entry will consider each of the following:

  • Level 5 certificate or equivalent in a relevant subject area and/or relevant practical experience. Mature students (over 23 years) may be exempt. Where a learner has not completed a formal qualification at the preceding level, arrangements for prior learning (formal and/or informal) will be considered to assess the required level of knowledge and skill to access the programme.
  • Learners must be a based in Ireland and hold an Irish or UK PPS number.
  • Learning Effort: Learners should be aware that each 15-credit module requires a learning effort of 150 hours (1 credit=10 hours) so that they can achieve the module outcomes. This includes time for undertaking both directed and self-directed teaching activities in the examples of readings, research, assessment work, online activities and attendance at Live Online Lectures.
  • Learners will be required to participate in live online classes/webinars & periodic attendance workshops.
  • As the programme aims to promote independent study skills, learners must be capable of studying on their own initiate, demonstrating their ability to plan and manage their own individual study schedules.
  • English Language Requirement: learners entering programmes leading to awards at Level 6 are expected to be able to: fluently read, draft, prepare and understand complex information, including quantitative information, that is personally relevant and reflecting a broad knowledge base. Any applicant whose first language is not English may also be required to demonstrate their level of English proficiency by completion of an appropriate recognised test such as IELTS (or equivalent) achieving a score of 5.5 or higher.
  • Digital Literacy: learners undertaking this programme must have a basic working knowledge of computers and their associated applications that will enable them to successfully participate in a blended learning programme. Learners must have access to the necessary equipment which will enable them to successfully participate in the online activities i.e., computer, broadband, email, recording equipment necessary for some skills demonstration tasks, and where applicable any other specialised software/equipment.
